Rising school violence: counter-terrorism chief Brejcha warns of parents' role
Violent incidents in Czech education are increasing and are increasingly coming within the remit of the National Centre Against Terrorism, Extremism and Cyber Crime (NCTEKK). The head of the department, Břetislav Brejcha, described in an interview with Novinky.cz how the office is monitoring a rise in violent acts, which in some cases have extremist undertones.
According to Brejcha, cases range from verbal threats to planning of serious criminal offences. As an example, he cited the case of young extremists who were preparing a murder and arson attack on a synagogue, or an arson attack in Pardubice. The Centre also deals with fraudulent call centres in Ukraine.
Brejcha emphasised that schools are not the source of the problem but the place where frustration is manifested. He considers the combination of social media and insufficient parental oversight to be a key factor. "The weakest link is the parents," he said. He pointed out that teachers often fear telling parents that their child is failing, and schools are thus gradually losing their educational potential.
