Thirty-year-old soldier Martin Schejbal received a three-year suspended prison sentence from Brno City Court for an attack on General Roman Hyťha. The incident occurred last September in an establishment on Kounicova Street.

Brno City Court on Tuesday sentenced thirty-year-old soldier Martin Schejbal to thirty-six months in prison with a three-year suspended sentence. At the same time, it banned him from driving motor vehicles for the same period. The decision is final, with neither side appealing.
In late September last year, Schejbal attacked General Roman Hyťha with a knife in the A2 bar on Kounicova Street in Brno. At the time he had up to three per mille of alcohol in his blood and reportedly has no recollection of the course of the evening. According to the sentence, he approached the victim with a cold weapon whose blade measured approximately nine centimetres and was aimed at the neck. The general, with combat experience from Afghanistan, caught the attack with his left hand, but the blade cut through his tendons, nerves and muscles. The injury required several days of hospitalisation and continues to have effects on his mobility and nerves to this day.
Both the victim and the attacker were celebrating in the establishment – Schejbal was celebrating successful examinations at the Defence University, Hyťha was celebrating the birthday of one of the instructors. They had not spoken to each other before the incident and were mutual strangers. "We were simply sitting at a table, simply having a conversation," the general described the moments before the assault to the court. The motive for the act thus remains unexplained.
Schejbal confessed to everything before the court and apologised. "What I did must have significantly affected his personal life," he stated. The court ordered him to cover the costs of treatment and to pay the victim compensation for pain and suffering, damages and lost income – a total of almost half a million crowns.
After the attack, Schejbal fled and, whilst intoxicated, got behind the wheel of his car, where he was stopped by a patrol. General Hyťha lost his security clearance due to the incident and was forced to leave his position in the general staff. He is now considering leaving the defence ministry entirely.
