Suspect in attempted murder at Plzeň pond detained
Plzeň police have detained a suspect in the stabbing of a woman at the Velký Bolevecký Pond, the police force announced on Sunday evening on X. The attack took place on Saturday around 13:00.
According to ceskenoviny.cz, an unknown man attacked a 39-year-old woman who had gone for a run around the pond on Saturday. "He inflicted a stab wound in the area of her back with a knife," said police spokeswoman Dagmar Mifková. Police officers were the first to arrive at the scene, providing first aid to the victim and handing her over to emergency responders. The woman was taken to hospital with an injury to her back.
The perpetrator fled the scene on a bicycle. On Saturday, dozens of police officers searched for him without success. Criminal investigators initially investigated the case on suspicion of attempted grievous bodily harm and disorderly conduct, but later reclassified it as attempted murder.
Investigators managed to secure camera footage in which the attacker was captured. They also turned to the public for help today. Spokeswoman Mifková described the perpetrator as a younger thin man who spoke Czech without an accent.
"Thanks to precise operational work, investigators managed to identify the individual today, which led to his restriction of personal liberty," police said. At the same time, they thanked the public and the media for their cooperation.
Regional criminal investigators are now conducting procedural steps with the detainee. "We will provide more information as soon as it is possible with regard to the criminal proceedings," police said.
