Suspended sentence for assault on pedagogue at Chrastava institution
A juvenile resident of a children's home in Chrastava in the Liberec region has received a suspended sentence from the regional court in Hradec Králové for last year's attack on a facility employee. The judge imposed two and a half years with a suspension period of three years. The ruling is not yet final.
The incident occurred in February of the previous year. The young man, together with two other minors who cannot face criminal proceedings due to their age, became involved in a conflict with a carer. The dispute arose over the use of a computer. Subsequently he incapacitated the woman using a cable and began to threaten her with a cold weapon.
State prosecutor Lenka Faltusová described in court that the assault victim suffered post-traumatic stress disorder, which was confirmed by medical records. The prosecution was based on acts of extortion, causing injury and making threats with use of a weapon.
In addition to the suspended sentence, the young man must pay the victim compensation of fifty thousand crowns. Both the defence and prosecution reserved the right to lodge an appeal.
The Chrastava children's home with school operated under state administration and cared for approximately twenty boys placed in institutional care. Medical staff recorded behavioural problems in most of them. The Ministry of Education ended the operation of the facility at the end of last calendar year.
