An unknown man took money from a woman after a fraudster instructed him via WhatsApp to download software enabling remote control of his phone. Police are asking for help identifying the perpetrator.

In the first half of June, a resident of Velké Meziříčí lost nearly 50,000 crowns as a result of a sophisticated fraud. The perpetrator contacted her claiming she was entitled to a quarter of a million crowns from an alleged investment and instructed her on how to proceed with its withdrawal.
The entire communication took place via WhatsApp. The suspect convinced the woman to install software that allowed him to take control of her mobile device. After gaining access, he manipulated her into providing sensitive information – her payment card number, PIN code, online banking login credentials, and even had her show him the card in front of her phone's camera.
He subsequently used the obtained information to make several cash withdrawals from ATMs in the capital city. The victim lost a total sum approaching fifty thousand crowns.
Investigators are now working on the suspicion of two criminal offences – fraud and unauthorised use of a payment instrument. During investigation of the case, they analysed security camera recordings and obtained an image of a man they wish to question.
"We are asking citizens who could help with identifying this person, or who know where he is currently located, to contact us on line 158 or directly at the district station in Velké Meziříčí on number 974 282 721," police spokeswoman Michaela Lébrová appealed to the public.
