Body of missing woman identified, search lasted over a week
Deník.cz reports that police confirmed at a press conference on Friday the identity of the body found the day before in woodland near a tip in Frýdek-Místek. The remains, in a state of decomposition, belong to 38-year-old Jana Š., mother of two, who had been missing since 3 September.
The woman's husband reported her disappearance on 3 September. Jana Š. had celebrated her birthday on 2 September and left home without a mobile telephone and identity documents. She was believed to have had knives and a torch with her.
The woman worked as an assistant to a judge in the commercial division of the Regional Court in Ostrava. Martin Lichý, deputy head of the Moravian-Silesian police, said several days ago: "Recently she had been in an unfavourable psychological state. She had been trying to seek help on her own."
The search covered an extensive area. Dozens of police officers searched for her daily in Ostrava and Frýdek-Místek, also focusing on the surroundings of Beskydy reservoirs and mountain huts. Dog handlers, divers, members of the air service with drones and officers from a special police unit were deployed in operations in the field.
"Using drones we searched an area of approximately 220 km². The area was physically searched for 15 km along a watercourse, 25 km in the railway track area and more than 500 hectares of open ground," police stated.
The search included bridge structures, underpasses, overpasses, hot-water pipes, channels and abandoned locations. Police also reviewed more than 2,000 hours of CCTV footage.
