Google News CZ — Crime (cs) reports that Brno police have upgraded the legal classification of the tragic crash near Doubravník in the Brno region, in which a driver with a car full of children crashed into a tree. Laboratory blood tests revealed alcohol levels of 3.14 and 3.17 per mille.

In addition to manslaughter due to negligence under a stricter provision, police are now also investigating the case as endangerment under the influence of a controlled substance. "The change in legal classification came about following evaluation of laboratory results, which demonstrated a high level of alcohol in the blood at the time of sampling," the police stated.

The crash occurred last Wednesday around 10:30 on road 38715 near Běleč. The driver of a private vehicle crossed into the opposite lane for reasons not yet established, left the road, and struck a tree. There were five children in the vehicle. One of them died at the scene, with five other people — four children and the driver — suffering injuries and being taken to hospital. After the crash, the driver tested positive for over three per mille alcohol. The road was closed for several hours following the incident.

According to information from FK Střelice club on social media, the victim of the crash was a young footballer from this club. Some media outlets report that the driver was a coach transporting young players from a summer training camp. The club commented on the event via Facebook: "We will address this event thoroughly, we will fully cooperate with the authorities investigating the crash, and we will draw appropriate conclusions from it. At the same time, we will review our procedures and rules for organising youth events so that a similar tragedy can never happen again."

Police interviewed the driver during the course of this week in a healthcare facility once his health condition permitted. They also commissioned an expert assessment to retroactively calculate the alcohol level at the time of the crash itself. According to the Novinky.cz website, the driver was subsequently released for home care.

Police consulted the question of custody with the supervising state prosecutor immediately after the crash. "However, he did not find the existence of legal grounds for detention," the police added on X. Investigation into the precise course of events in the crash continues.
