Upgraded charges after laboratory tests: driver was transporting footballers with 3.1 per mille
Police upgraded and expanded the legal classification of the tragic crash near Doubravník in the Brno region, according to the website České noviny. The driver, who was transporting five children in the vehicle, collided with a tree — one child died in the crash and five other people were injured, including four children. All the injured were taken to hospital.
Police made the change in classification after receiving the results of blood tests. Laboratory analysis confirmed levels of 3.14 and 3.17 per mille of alcohol in the blood at the time of sampling. Immediately after the crash, the driver tested at over three per mille.
"The change in legal classification occurred after evaluation of laboratory results, which confirmed a high level of alcohol in the blood at the time of sampling," police said.
In addition to causing death through negligence under a stricter paragraph, police are now also investigating the case under the charge of endangerment under the influence of a narcotic substance. Police questioned the man being investigated this week at a healthcare facility as soon as his health condition permitted. According to information on Novinky.cz, the driver was released for home care.
Police also ordered an expert assessment to retrospectively calculate the level of alcohol at the time of the crash itself. The question of remand was immediately consulted with the prosecutor following the incident — however, the prosecutor found no legal grounds for remand.
"The possibility of submitting a motion to take the driver into remand was immediately consulted by police with the supervising prosecutor. However, he found no legal grounds for remand existed," police announced on X.
The victim of the crash was a young footballer from FK Střelice. According to some media reports, a club trainer was transporting young players to a summer training camp. The club stated on social media that it does not disclaim responsibility and intends to fully cooperate with the investigating authorities.
"We will thoroughly investigate the entire incident, we will fully cooperate with the authorities investigating the crash, and we will draw the appropriate conclusions from it. At the same time, we will review our procedures and rules for organising youth events so that a similar tragedy can never happen again," FK Střelice said.

The road was closed for several hours after the crash. The exact course of events is still under investigation.
