The Liberec Regional Court on Thursday again imposed an 11-year custodial sentence on a man who brutally abused his partner over several days and then abandoned her in a meadow, where she died from her injuries.

The Liberec Regional Court on Thursday again imposed an eleven-year custodial sentence on a 30-year-old man. Last spring, he caused the death of his partner, who was two years younger, in Višňová in the Frýdlant projection area.
The man brutally beat his victim over several days. He struck her in the head and chest, causing her severe brain injury. He then carried her to a field behind the village and abandoned her without assistance. The woman died there as a result of the injuries she had sustained.
The court had already handed down the same sentence in February, but the appellate court returned the case due to a formal error. At the retrial, the accused once again admitted guilt. The presiding judge, Richard Skýba, stated that there had been no substantial change in the circumstances and the court took account of mitigating factors, particularly the guilty plea and expression of remorse.
The state prosecutor originally sought thirteen years; at the second hearing she proposed twelve years. The perpetrator faced a sentence of between eight and sixteen years' deprivation of liberty. The sentence has not yet become legally binding; both sides have reserved the right to appeal.
