The Olomouc regional court today began hearing a case concerning last year's killing of a woman in the village of Mírov in the Šumperk district. In the dock sits thirty-six-year-old Patrik Cigoš, who faces charges of murdering his partner. The state prosecutor is seeking a sentence of twenty-eight years imprisonment. The crime occurred on 26 November last year. The perpetrator stabbed his victim with kitchen utensils just three weeks after leaving the Mírov correctional facility on the basis of conditional release. He had been serving a previous sentence at that prison for an almost identical act committed in May 2014, when he carried out a similar murder in Frýdek-Místek. For that offence, the Ostrava court sentenced him to sixteen and a half years with increased security. After his release, he moved in with the woman from Mírov.
According to the case file, the man initially attacked his partner following a verbal argument. Police previously stated that the attack came from behind and the victim had no opportunity to defend herself. The woman sustained multiple stab and cut wounds, to which she succumbed on the scene. Expert reports confirmed that the victim experienced extreme physical agony during the attack. The case file assesses the act as murder committed in an exceptionally cruel manner combined with torture. After committing the act, he called the police himself.
The man confessed to the act, but expressed no wish to conclude an agreement on guilt and sentence. The second act, which he allegedly committed just twenty-two days after his return to freedom, exhibits almost identical characteristics with the first case.
