Three thieves caught in basement of Jihlava bakery during copper theft
According to Google News CZ — Crime, police detained three men on Saturday 29 August whilst attempting to steal copper pipes from an abandoned complex on Žižkova Street in Jihlava, where a bakery was previously located.
A patrol from the rapid response and escort department was dispatched to the scene shortly after half past ten at night following a report of unknown persons entering the building. It was joined at the scene by a patrol from the Jihlava district department.
The complex proved to be a large and intricate compound consisting of outdoor spaces, buildings and production halls. The patrols therefore divided and systematically searched individual sectors. A pair of officers descended to the basement level, where after opening the door to one of the rooms they came across three men hiding by the wall. Police used a coercive measure to detain them — a firearm pointed in a threatening manner.
During the subsequent search of the premises, copper piping with a diameter of five centimetres was found in a hall one floor above, which the perpetrators had prepared to remove and had already stripped of insulation. The men gained entry to the building by removing OSB boards securing the entrance, then entered the production hall and used a screwdriver to dismantle and break the pipes.
"During our investigation, we established that the perpetrators entered the building after removing the OSB boards which secured the entrance to the building's spaces. They then entered the production hall, where they subsequently used a screwdriver to dismantle and break copper pipes with a diameter of five centimetres, which they intended to steal from the scene and had already prepared for this purpose," stated Sergeant Mgr. Jaroslav Dřímal, head of the Jihlava district department.
All three men aged between 33 and 53 were detained as persons suspected of committing a criminal offence and were transported to police custody. A forensic technician was also called to the scene, who secured evidence and documented the entire matter. The three face charges of attempted theft and damage to another's property, committed in joint commission of the offence.
