The Police of the Czech Republic (policie.gov.cz) has initiated criminal proceedings against a twenty-six-year-old man for the particularly serious crime of attempted murder following a brutal attack at a railway station in the village of Střeň in the Olomouc region.
On Saturday, 19 September 2026, shortly before midnight, police officers received a report from a fifty-eight-year-old man who had been attacked by an unknown perpetrator after exiting a train arriving from Velké Losiny. The attacker ran at the victim and assaulted him with his fists. The injured man attempted to flee, but the aggressor caught up with him in the railway tracks. He picked up a stone and, saying he would kill him, repeatedly struck the older man on the head.
The victim attempted to escape again, making his way towards the railway crossing. However, he was not safe there either — the attacker caught up with him, picked up another stone and struck him several more times forcefully on the head. The attacker then stopped and fled the scene. First aid was provided to the injured man by passers-by who happened to be present before police officers and paramedics arrived.
Police officers called in Olomouc detectives and immediately launched a search. Within two hours of receiving the report, the suspect was apprehended on a street in Střeň. The attacker tested positive for narcotic and psychotropic substances upon apprehension and is reportedly a drug user according to available information. The men did not know each other and the motive for the crime remains unclear. The defendant had not been prosecuted in the past.
Regional detectives, who took over the case from their district colleagues, submitted a motion to the regional state prosecutor for a proposal to place the man in custody. The court accepted the proposal. For the particularly serious crime of attempted murder, the defendant faces imprisonment of ten to eighteen years.
