A young man broke into an empty house in Pardubice on Tuesday in broad daylight. The owner surprised the intruder on his return, followed by an armed assault and escape by bicycle. Police apprehended the thief thanks to the abandoned mobile phone.

During Tuesday morning, a twenty-year-old man ventured to break into an unoccupied residence in a Pardubice housing estate. He assumed the house would be unattended around lunchtime. However, his plan was thwarted by the owner's return.
Upon arrival, the owner already noticed a suspicious bicycle leaning against the fence, whose owner he did not know among his acquaintances. The kicked-in front door confirmed that someone had broken in. Upon entering the dwelling, he spotted a stranger examining his belongings.
The property owner seized a historical weapon hanging in the living room and attempted to force the intruder to remain on the spot until the arrival of a patrol unit, which he had meanwhile summoned via emergency services. However, a struggle broke out between the two men, during which the thief managed to slip away. He mounted the bicycle and vanished.
Law enforcement arrived within minutes. One of them provided first aid to the injured party and awaited the arrival of emergency services. The second patrol member, together with colleagues, set out to trace the offender. In the village of Hradiště na Písku, only a few kilometres away, they located the young man matching the description. They immediately restrained him and took him in for questioning.
The thief took jewellery worth hundreds of crowns and car keys from the house. He dropped the keys from his trouser pocket before his disappearance. In his haste, he also left his smartphone in the wardrobe, which he had placed there whilst searching the rooms. This careless mistake accelerated his identification.
Criminal authorities initiated proceedings for the offences of theft and violation of the inviolability of a dwelling. In the event of conviction, the offender faces a prison sentence of up to two years.
