Prague Regional Court has sentenced a thirty-nine-year-old woman to ten years in prison for plunging a kitchen knife into her husband's abdomen. During the investigation, the couple claimed the man had injured himself.

Prague Regional Court on Thursday imposed a ten-year prison sentence on a thirty-nine-year-old woman who stabbed her husband in the abdomen with a kitchen knife in December last year in Zruč nad Sázavou. The man was saved by rapid transport to hospital and surgery, according to Novinky.cz.
During the investigation, the couple claimed the injured party had inflicted the wound on himself. The court rejected this version. "The court had no doubt about who caused the injury. There were two opposing versions here – the version of the defendant and the injured party against the version presented by the prosecution," said the presiding judge Jiří Wažik.
The judge pointed out inconsistencies in the testimonies. "The court cannot explain how it is that the injured party concealed the fact that he had stabbed himself from his own son. That this information would not have been mentioned during the emergency call. That this information would not have been mentioned to the paramedics or the police who arrived at the crime scene," added Wažik. The injured party initially made no mention of self-infliction. Only after some time did the defendant come forward with this version, and later her husband adopted it as well.
The evidential situation was strengthened by an expert report and a recording of the emergency call, which indicated that the man had not inflicted the injury on himself.
The defendant described how her partner came home drunk after working on renovation at their neighbours' house. She was preparing food and chopping garlic when he approached her from behind. According to her account, he grabbed the knife from her and plunged it into his chest. The woman allegedly called the ambulance, but their son was the one who communicated with the operators.
The convicted woman appealed the court's decision on the spot.
