The Olomouc High Court has upheld a sentence for a woman who struck her husband three times in the head with a wooden axe whilst intoxicated. The man survived only thanks to rapid emergency medical care.

Judges at the Olomouc High Court on Wednesday rejected the appeal of a 53-year-old woman from the Zlín region and upheld her seven-year prison sentence for attempted murder. Last September, whilst intoxicated, she attacked her husband, who is five years her senior, and inflicted injuries from which he recovered only through luck and prompt medical care.
The incident occurred in their shared flat. Both returned home drunk in the evening, and a quarrel broke out between the couple. The man verbally abused his wife, and she slapped him twice. When he began to mockingly provoke her, saying she could not hit him properly, she took a wooden axe and struck him three times in the head. As a result of the attack, he suffered serious brain injuries.
The Regional Court in Brno – Zlín branch – imposed the sentence on 11 May. The woman appealed against it, arguing that the sentence was disproportionately harsh. She claimed that her husband had provoked her, that she regretted her actions, and that she wanted to devote herself to her family and her sick father.
However, the chairman of the panel, Milan Kaderka, stated that the minimum sentence for this crime is ten years and the regional court had already significantly reduced the punishment. According to his remarks, it cannot be overlooked that the defendant attacked repeatedly and fatal consequences occurred only by chance. The judge emphasised that a clear signal must be sent that problems in relationships caused by alcohol should not be resolved with violence.
