At a hospital in Lüdenscheid, North Rhine-Westphalia, a young woman took a newborn baby just one week old from the patient room of the child's mother. The 18-year-old suspect has since been taken into custody.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon. The woman had disguised herself as clinic staff by wearing a light blue coat and removed the infant from the mother's room. Shortly afterwards, passers-by discovered the boy in an adjoining room of a nearby car park. An ambulance brought the child back to the hospital, where he was examined by doctors. According to the Hagen public prosecutor's office, the baby was neither injured nor overheated and is in good condition.
Police immediately launched a search and sealed off the car park to secure evidence. Through evaluation of video footage from the area where the infant was found, as well as numerous tip-offs from the public, investigators identified the 18-year-old from Lüdenscheid as the suspect. On Sunday afternoon, officers searched her flat and arrested her provisionally. The young woman had previously come to the attention of authorities.
The 18-year-old is now under investigation on suspicion of child abduction and kidnapping. The motives for the act remain unclear.
