A 64-year-old Austrian was arrested in the Greek town of Oropos. He is wanted in Germany and is accused of systematically evading value-added tax between 2023 and June 2025 whilst acting as a consultant for a mineral oil trading company. The alleged damage is said to exceed 63 million euros.

Greek investigators arrested a 64-year-old Austrian in the Oropos area on the evening of 3 July. The man was wanted with a European arrest warrant issued by German authorities.
According to the Greek police, several days of investigations by the investigative unit of the directorate for the prosecution and investigation of crimes in Attica led to the arrest. The suspect was handed over to the competent prosecutor's office.
According to German investigative authorities, the 64-year-old is said to have worked between 2023 and June 2025 as a consultant for a mineral oil trading company. He is accused of systematically committing tax offences in this role. Specifically, he is alleged not to have remitted the value-added tax that was due.
Through these alleged actions, an unlawful economic advantage of more than 63 million euros is said to have been obtained.
