Knife attack in Freiburg: 74-year-old dead, police suspect second attack
A 74-year-old man has died from injuries sustained in a knife attack in the Rieselfeld district of Freiburg. According to tagesschau.de, Freiburg police and the public prosecutor's office released further details about the case on Wednesday.
The attack took place on Tuesday evening at around 21:20 on the grounds of a church community centre. A witness alerted police – when officers arrived, the victim was already dead. The suspected murder weapon was secured near the scene of the crime.
That same evening, police arrested a 30-year-old German national in the area of Berliner-Allee. Police dogs and a helicopter were deployed in the manhunt; witnesses had previously described the suspect.
Investigators suspect strongly that the 30-year-old is also responsible for a knife attack the previous Sunday. In that incident, a 29-year-old man was seriously injured on Schlossbergring near the city centre. According to current findings, the suspect had met the victim shortly beforehand and attacked him without warning. In that case, no suspect had initially been arrested.
Police have found no indication of religious motives. Details regarding motive and further background remain unknown. According to current findings, no other persons were attacked on Tuesday evening.
