A 74-year-old man from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has become the victim of fraud, losing around €40,000. A blue notice suddenly appeared on his computer screen with a telephone number. When the pensioner dialled the number, an alleged expert answered.
The fraudster posed as an IT expert and obtained remote access to the victim's computer. Through this connection, he was subsequently able to withdraw money from the 74-year-old's account. The exact course of events and the identity of the perpetrator are currently the subject of police investigations.
Police warn again against so-called tech-support fraud schemes. Criminals use fake error messages on computers to prompt unsuspecting users to make contact. Once the victims call, fake experts put them under pressure to install remote access software or make direct payments.
