Attack with caustic liquid on AfD stand in Bad Kreuznach – nine injured
Nine people were injured in an attack on an AfD information stand in Bad Kreuznach, including several members of the Bundestag. A suspect was apprehended at the scene.
Caustic liquid poured on AfD election stand – politicians and visitors affected
Nine people were injured in Bad Kreuznach on Wednesday afternoon after an irritant liquid was poured onto an AfD information stand. According to BILD, those injured include AfD parliamentary group deputy Sebastian Münzenmaier (36), Bundestag member Nicole Höchst (56), as well as two Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament members. Two of those affected were taken to hospital as a precaution.
According to initial investigations, the liquid was poured from an adjacent building onto the stand and those present. The substance splashed from the stand's umbrella onto politicians and visitors; several suffered mild skin irritation. Münzenmaier showed signs of skin redness on his neck the following day, according to an AfD spokesperson who spoke to BILD.
Höchst raised serious allegations on the platform X: "Concentrated chlorophenol was dumped from a window of a laboratory at the corner of Roßstraße and Mannheimer Straße onto the stand and the people present." She described the incident as a "cowardly attack". Chlorophenol is considered harmful to health and toxic; the substance is readily absorbed through the skin. A police spokesperson stated that investigations were ongoing into whether it was actually chlorophenol or another liquid.
Münzenmaier commented to BILD: "The attack on my colleagues and myself shows: our opponents are completely out of arguments. Whoever believes they must fight us with chemicals rather than arguments has already lost the political contest."
Police stated that, given the small amount of liquid released, no serious injuries are expected based on current knowledge. Following the incident in the area of the Brückenhäuser, police, fire brigade and emergency services deployed a large contingent. A suspect was apprehended at the scene and is to be questioned in the coming days. The political motives behind the attack and possible involvement of further individuals are currently under investigation.
