Block described two different reactions within the family. She herself had always hoped for a negotiated solution. Her father, Eugen Block, founder of the steakhouse chain "Block House", had a different approach in mind. "My father stuck to his view that one should simply take the children out of there," she told the court. Speculations about offering the ex-husband money had triggered strong reactions from him. She had tried to dissuade him from rash actions – without wanting to shift responsibility for the later abduction to him: "I am not accusing my father."
Meeting with abductors denied
Regarding a meeting in the Grand Elysée Hamburg claimed by the abductors a few days before New Year's Eve 2023, Block stated that no such meeting had taken place. The abductors had told the court that she wished them success at that meeting.
Also denied: she was supposed to have handed over personal items belonging to the children – pillows and soft toys – to the men that day. Footage from a surveillance camera shows Block entering the hotel with a bag. This may have been kitchen utensils from the Christmas menu that she had taken back to the hotel kitchen, according to her explanation.
No consent to abduction
Block emphasised that she would never have consented to an abduction by masked perpetrators. This would fundamentally contradict her vision of the children's return. Had she known something was planned for New Year's Eve, she would not have been at a ball with around 1,000 guests and would not have been sitting at the bar until 3 a.m.
She worked through numerous questions and apparent contradictions chronologically, which had emerged in the course of the extensive proceedings. She corrected and supplemented individual points in doing so. Previously, her lawyer had also made a statement.
Additionally damaging for the defendants: a child psychiatrist presented her expert report on the affected children to the court. The children were abducted in Denmark on New Year's Eve 2023. The trial has been running since 11 July before Hamburg Regional Court.
