Germany: Life sentence for perpetrator of Magdeburg Christmas market attack
The Magdeburg Regional Court sentenced Taleb Jawad al-Abdulmohsen, a 51-year-old Saudi national, to life imprisonment on Friday, 26 June. He was found guilty of murdering six people and intentionally injuring numerous others in a car attack on the city's Christmas market on 20 December 2024.
The attack killed six people, with more than 300 others injured. Judge Dirk Sternberg stressed that the defendant had "targeted a very high number of victims" and "accepted that any person within the radius of action of his vehicle could be killed or seriously injured".
The judges also found that there were particularly serious grounds for the offence and ordered preventive custody with reservation. This measure significantly impedes early release, which is normally possible under German criminal law after 15 years of imprisonment. The prosecution and the joint plaintiffs had hoped that this security measure, which is provided for dangerous prisoners, would be imposed ex officio.
The trial took place in a specially erected temporary courtroom to accommodate the large number of victims and joint plaintiffs.
