At the private Docemus school in Gosen-Neu-Zittau, a 19-year-old killed a student and an educator. The suspect is being held in custody pending trial.

Knife attack on school grounds: Educator Phillip P. dies a hero

As reported by Google News DE — Crime, two people were killed with a knife on Thursday afternoon on the grounds of the private Docemus school in Gosen-Neu-Zittau: 18-year-old student Anna-Lena and 30-year-old educator Phillip P.

The suspect is 19-year-old Mika S., who according to investigators was Anna-Lena's ex-boyfriend. According to a student, the two had already argued at a bus stop outside the school before Mika S. attacked the girl with a knife on the school grounds at approximately 13:15.

"He stabbed her at least 20 times"

Educator Petra Alves, 64, who has worked at the school for five years, witnessed the act from a classroom window. "I went to the window and saw the perpetrator stabbing. Again and again. He stabbed her at least 20 times. He was completely out of his mind," Alves recounts.

A seventh-grader who had seen the two briefly earlier at the bus stop soon encountered the bloody scene on the school grounds. "She was already on the ground. There was a lot of blood," the student said. Other children screamed or fled into the school building.

Phillip P. intervened – and paid with his life

Alves describes how the attacker kneeled over the student lying on the ground, embraced her and laughed hysterically. At that moment Phillip P. appeared on the school grounds. "Then Phillip stepped in," Alves says. "The perpetrator got up and stabbed immediately."

Phillip P. was equally popular with students and colleagues. He worked as a goalkeeping coach and played himself for SG Grün-Weiß Deutsch-Wusterhausen in the district premier league. Just a year earlier he had married; he and his wife had planned to have children.

Both victims – Anna-Lena and Phillip P. – died on the school grounds. The emergency doctors were unable to save them.

Teachers held suspect at bay with spade

After Phillip P. collapsed, several teachers ran after the suspect. According to a student, they held Mika S. at bay with a spade until police arrived and arrested him.

Custody sought, double murder charge

The Frankfurt (Oder) state prosecutor's office has applied for custody for Mika S. A government spokeswoman stated that he is being charged with double murder. He is alleged to have killed Anna-Lena and Phillip P. "from base motives, among other things".

On the school grounds, mourners laid down flowers, candles and soft toys – also at the motorcycle of the slain educator. An emergency chaplain, accompanied by a police officer, attended to students, teachers and educators on campus who required psychological support.

Petra Alves summed up what many at the Docemus school feel: "He is a hero for us. He gave his life because he wanted to save a student."
