Third drone and hexogen discovered near Leipzig airport
The attack plan around Leipzig airport was more extensive than previously known. A third drone and highly explosive material were found on a field in Kabelsketal.
Third drone and military explosives secured near airport
Three drones, not two, were discovered around Leipzig airport – according to a report by 20 Minuten citing NDR, WDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung. The previously unknown third drone was found on 14 August on a field in Kabelsketal, roughly ten days after the first two discoveries.
During investigations the following day, investigators apparently secured approximately 50 grammes of hexogen – a highly explosive military explosive substance. The reporting media rely on information from security circles; the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office has not confirmed the information to date.
The first drone discovery caused a stir on 5 August 2026. The object lay beside a Ukrainian Antonov and was fitted with explosives, although the detonator was defective. A second drone is said to have collided with a DHL aircraft – the object itself was never found. Examinations of the aircraft following the collision merely revealed that it was not a bird strike.
According to German broadcaster Tagesschau, security circles assume that Russian intelligence services were involved in the attack plans. Russia denies the allegations. A secured DNA trace is said to be connected to an arson attack on the DHL logistics centre in Leipzig on 20 July 2024.
