A former employee of Nuremberg police must serve three years in prison. The Nuremberg-Fürth Regional Court imposed this sentence on Tuesday because the 41-year-old had taken cash totalling nearly 200,000 euros from the safe of the evidence storage chamber. The prosecution had requested exactly this prison sentence. The defence counsel for the woman, who had admitted her wrongdoing, had instead sought a suspended sentence.
The convicted woman worked in the evidence storage chamber, where seized items are stored. After her two colleagues had finished for the day, she took the key to the safe according to the court and helped herself to the money bags kept there. The cash came from other cases, including drug trafficking and money laundering investigations.
The judge acknowledged that the defendant had confessed. At the same time, however, he emphasised that as a police officer she had not only broken the trust of her agency but also that of the general public.
The woman's former partner, who had kept part of the money for her, received eighteen months' suspended sentence. 126,000 euros have already been recovered. The convicted woman must pay back the remaining 66,000 euros.
The verdict is not yet final.
