Explosion outside Turkish jeweller at Augsburg central station – two injured
An unknown object exploded near Augsburg central station on Wednesday morning. Two teenagers were slightly injured and the station was temporarily closed.
Hand grenade suspected after explosion at Augsburg station
An explosion occurred near Augsburg central station in the early hours of Wednesday morning. According to 20 Minuten, an as yet unidentified object detonated in a building passage near the station.
Two people sustained minor injuries from blast trauma: according to Bild newspaper, a 17-year-old teenager and an 18-year-old. In addition, window panes were damaged.
The incident significantly disrupted long-distance rail traffic, public transport and road traffic around the station. Explosives experts from the state criminal police attended the scene, a police spokesman said.
Bild reported that the object that exploded was a hand grenade, which detonated outside a Turkish jeweller. Police were investigating a possible connection to organised crime.
During the operation, officers discovered a further suspicious object. As a result, the central station was completely cordoned off and train services were halted. At around 10 o'clock, police gave the all-clear: the object proved to be harmless. The station was subsequently reopened, a spokesman for Augsburg police said. No further official information about the background to the explosion was initially available.
