A hand grenade exploded outside a Turkish jewellery shop on Bahnhofstrasse in Augsburg, Germany, in the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, according to Digi24. Two people sustained minor injuries, described by police as acoustic trauma. Windows in the area were damaged as a result of the blast.
The explosion occurred in a passage of a building, near VR Bank on Bahnhofstrasse, on the opposite side of the main station — not directly at the station, authorities clarified. The police intervention operation commenced shortly after 05:00 in the morning.
As a result of the explosion, and the subsequent discovery of a suspect object inside the central station, it was completely closed, with railway services and public transport in the city being suspended. Explosives disposal experts were dispatched to the scene.
Suspect object proved harmless
According to a spokesman for Augsburg police, cited by focus.de, the object identified at the station proved to be harmless. The station was reopened during the morning, around 11:50.
Police have not released official information about the nature of the device that exploded on the street. According to information obtained by Bild, it was a hand grenade, and investigators are checking a possible link to organised crime. Initial findings suggest that the main station was not the intended target.
Streets in the station area were cordoned off during the intervention, according to a police statement on the X social network. Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung reported disruptions to rail traffic, and Bild reported the impact on local public transport.
