Police abandon search in Hambach Forest – no evidence of suspect
A police unit searched Hambach Forest in North Rhine-Westphalia on Sunday once again for alleged power saboteur Daniel V. (48) – without success. According to BILD, investigators stated on request that the search had been called off in the evening; there were no new findings or traces relating to the suspect.
Daniel V. came under scrutiny by authorities after he claimed responsibility in a letter of confession for attacks on transformer stations in Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony. He stated his motive as fighting fossil fuels. Unusually, he had included his name and address in the letter.
On Friday afternoon, officers searched his residence in Gevelsberg – he was not present. On Friday afternoon, the special operations unit was deployed to Hambach Forest, where the man's conspicuous lorry was found in the immediate vicinity of Hambach open-cast brown coal mine. Officers stormed the vehicle, but there was no trace of the 48-year-old there either.
Subsequently, police officers searched the forest area along with drones and search dogs into the night – without result.
On Saturday, police released a public wanted notice with photographs of the suspect. On Sunday, an image of a bicycle that he may be using was also released. A tip-off hotline was established: citizens can report observations around the clock on 0331-505950.
