According to zeit.de, police in Merseburg arrested a 31-year-old man overnight on Saturday who is said to have first fired a blank-firing weapon into the air from his balcony.
Shortly afterwards, police officers spotted the man near his flat – still holding the weapon. When officers attempted to arrest him, he discarded the blank-firing weapon, grabbed a police officer's service weapon and struck the officer in the face. Three police officers were slightly injured in the incident.
A 43-year-old man also disrupted the police operation and attacked an officer. According to his own account, he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Police asked him to leave the area.
During transport, the 31-year-old continued to resist and damaged the interior of a police van. During the subsequent flat search, officers seized several blank-firing weapons and a telescopic baton. The investigation is ongoing.
