Wanted man arrested in Mainz E-scooter chase with drugs and knife found

A 32-year-old wanted under an arrest warrant triggered a pursuit with police in Mainz city centre on Tuesday morning. According to swr.de, officers wanted to arrest the man – but he initially escaped on an E-scooter.
According to police, the fugitive constantly switched between the road and the pavement, putting both pedestrians and motorists in dangerous situations.
The pursuit eventually ended in Rhabanusstraße in Mainz's Neustadt district. There, emergency personnel overtook the man in a police car and blocked his path. The 32-year-old then jumped off the scooter and fled on foot – but within a few metres, officers caught up with him, overpowered him and handcuffed him.
During the subsequent search, police officers found drugs as well as a so-called one-handed knife, which cannot legally be carried in public in Germany. Additionally, the man's behaviour indicated to police that he was under the influence of drugs. A quick test confirmed this suspicion; a blood sample was taken.
Following this, the 32-year-old was taken to a correctional facility – where the arrest warrant would have taken him anyway. Why he was originally wanted, police did not say. What is known is only that he had not paid a fine. Several new criminal investigations were now initiated against him, including for possession of narcotics and for the prohibited knife.
