Fatal knife attack on bridge in Erkner – second violent incident in days
A 24-year-old woman died on Monday morning in the Brandenburg town of Erkner following an attack. According to WELT, a man attacked her at approximately 6.30 a.m. in public space on the Baekeland Bridge in the town centre. Despite immediate resuscitation measures, she succumbed to her severe injuries shortly afterwards.
According to the Lausitzer Rundschau, a stabbing implement was used as the weapon. The 29-year-old suspect initially fled the scene. However, following witness reports, police were able to track him down and arrest him.
According to police, both individuals knew each other. A police spokesman left open the exact nature of the relationship between the deceased and the alleged perpetrator. Both are also reported to have a migration background. Police have so far released little information about the circumstances of the act and any possible motive.
The subsequent police operation and search for the fleeing suspect led to significant traffic disruptions during rush hour. Erkner is located south-east of Berlin.
The incident is already the second fatal violent act in the region within days. Last Thursday in Gosen-Neu Zittau, an 18-year-old schoolgirl and a 30-year-old educator were killed in a knife attack. A 19-year-old is considered the suspect in that case. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
