Fresh attack on CSD memorial site in Tiergarten
The memorial site in Berlin's Tiergarten for the Islamist attack on Christopher Street Day has been damaged again, according to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. A police patrol discovered the devastated maple tree at approximately 1.20 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Unknown individuals had torn the memorial tree from the ground and ripped out the protective fence. Memorial candles and photographs were damaged or completely destroyed in the process. The police left open the question of whether the tree had been completely uprooted. By midday it was standing in its original location again — albeit visibly tilted. The police did not explain why it is back in the protective fence.
Just under a week earlier, a rainbow bench at the same location had been demolished. The remains were removed; the bench is to be repaired.
The background: On 25 July, an Islamist attacker drove a vehicle into a group of people and crashed against a tree. The 21-year-old then attacked further people with a machete before fleeing. One woman was killed, and 31 other people were injured, some seriously. One day after the attack, police officers shot the perpetrator.
