Kiliç was shot dead in Munich on 29 August 2001. The act remained unsolved for years; investigating authorities wrongly pursued the victim's relatives and personal circle for a long time, instead of considering a racially motivated background.
Only in 2011, after the NSU was exposed, was the crime attributed to the terror trio of Uwe Mundlos, Uwe Böhnhardt and Beate Zschäpe. Between 2000 and 2007, the NSU committed nine murders nationwide of people with a migration background, as well as one additional murder of a police officer.
