Grenade explodes in Augsburg: railway station closed and organised crime investigated
An explosion in an underground passage at Augsburg railway station in southern Germany caused two minor injuries. Police are investigating a possible link to organised crime.
Explosion in Augsburg closes main railway station
The main railway station in Augsburg, in southern Germany, was closed this morning following the explosion of an unknown object in an underground passage, according to CNN Portugal.
According to German newspaper BILD, a hand grenade exploded in front of a Turkish jewellery shop. Augsburger Allgemeine reports two minor injuries. Shortly afterwards, an explosives detection dog reacted to a rubbish bin in the vicinity.
North Schwaben police announced the launch of a major operation early in the morning and posted on social media that an "unknown object exploded" in the underground passage. A second suspicious object, detected during an inspection of the building, led to the complete closure of the station and the suspension of all railway traffic.
The incident also caused disruptions to road traffic and local public transport, including the closure of a railway line.
According to BILD, authorities are investigating a possible link to organised crime.
