Child abuse defendant found dead in Hof prison – children's home manager from Wunsiedel
A senior employee of a children's home in Wunsiedel was found dead in his cell one day after being charged with abuse.
Suspected children's home manager dies in custody in Hof
A senior employee of a children's home in Wunsiedel has been found dead in his prison cell at Hof correctional facility, according to the Upper Franconia police headquarters and the Hof state prosecutor's office. As reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the 49-year-old was found lifeless during an evening check on Tuesday – one day after charges were brought against him. According to the authorities, there are no indications of foul play.
The man had been in custody since early March. On Monday, the Hof Regional Court had raised the charges against him; according to the state prosecutor's office, the indictment had not yet been served on him at the time of his death.
Charges: serious abuse and child pornographic material
The indictment accuses the suspect of several sexual offences: multiple counts of serious sexual abuse and rape of a boy, as well as possession and production of child pornographic material. According to investigators, the alleged offences did not take place in the children's home itself, but at the man's residence in Hof.
The alleged victim, a boy, was between seven and nine years old at the time of the offence. The boy's mother filed a report in autumn 2025. The boy had been in the children's home until September 2024; according to the state prosecutor's office, there were subsequently private contacts with the suspect. The alleged abuse is said to have occurred between 2023 and 2025.
Thousands of digital traces, more than 100 witnesses
During searches in December 2025 and late March 2026 – at the suspect's residence, his workplace and other locations – officers secured numerous pieces of evidence, including a large number of data storage devices. Before the arrest, mobile devices are said to have been reset; investigators believe that someone attempted to permanently delete data.
"Through meticulous investigative work, officers evaluated thousands of digital traces and interviewed more than 100 people," police and the state prosecutor's office stated. In doing so, investigators found a four-digit number of files containing child and youth pornographic material. The suspect is accused of producing a three-digit number of these files himself.
Suicide risk was known, no fault of prison staff
According to investigators, the 49-year-old had been classified at times as at risk of suicide; appropriate measures had been initiated at the correctional facility. Chief state prosecutor Andreas Cantzler stated there were no indications of any fault on the part of prison staff. Whether the man's lawyer – who according to Cantzler was aware of the investigation results – had informed his client about this was unknown.
No connection to 2023 murder case
The children's home in Wunsiedel was already the scene of a crime in 2023: a ten-year-old girl was sexually abused and killed there. According to current investigative findings, there is no connection between that case and that of the now deceased 49-year-old.
