According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the basic supply of cocaine to German major cities is secure. The greatest concern among dealers is not police enforcement pressure, but an impending market saturation.
Profit margins remain enormous: from the drug laboratory in Colombia to dealers in Munich or Berlin, cocaine increases in price by more than a thousand per cent. According to estimates, six per cent of all adult Germans have consumed the drug at least once. However, the supply would be sufficient for considerably more customers; prices have stagnated for years.
Consuming society regards the use as self-evident – and overlooks what consequences drug trafficking has in Latin America. The debate over whether the "war on drugs" requires a fundamental reorientation is gaining urgency in light of these developments.
