Prosecutors and police in Cologne have reopened a 30-year-old murder case. The new head of the Cold Case department, criminal chief inspector Melanie Düppen, and her team have reassessed the original evidence and found new leads.
In the early morning of 29 May 1996, hikers discovered the body of a 31-year-old man on a forest path near Alter Deutzer Postweg in Cologne-Ostheim. The autopsy revealed that the man had been stabbed multiple times in the upper body. The perpetrators subsequently doused the body with petrol and set it alight.
Near the body, officers found a dark grey Mercedes. The Cologne resident was the owner of a kiosk called MUFTI's TREFF in Rösrath and a tanning salon Miami Sun in Cologne-Vingst. It is suspected that he also had contacts in the Cologne area.
The motives for the crime remain unclear to this day. The perpetrator has not yet been caught.
Prosecutors and police are now offering €5,000 for information leading to the investigation and arrest of the perpetrator. The investigators hope that by publicising the case they will receive further information from the public.
