Life sentence for Magdeburg Christmas market attacker
A 50-year-old man from Saudi Arabia must serve a life sentence in prison. The competent court in Magdeburg convicted him of the fatal vehicle attack on the Christmas market in December of last year. The judges assessed his guilt as particularly serious, making early release from prison virtually impossible.
During the attack on 20 December 2024, the physician steered a rented vehicle into the crowd of Christmas market visitors. Six people died in the incident, whilst many others suffered physical injuries and psychological trauma. The public prosecutor's office consistently assumed intentional conduct.
During the announcement of the verdict on Thursday, a technical fault occurred: the microphone of the presiding judge failed, requiring the reading to be interrupted briefly. After the repair, the court proceeded with its decision.
In the courtroom, bereaved relatives had displayed photographs of their relatives who lost their lives in the attack. For the relatives, it was particularly distressing that the convicted man showed little compassion. He expressed himself barely at all regarding the consequences of his actions.
Although the verdict is now legally binding, the consequences of the attack will occupy those affected for a long time to come. The physical and psychological scars remain.
