Prosecution calls for maximum sentence for Magdeburg attacker

The Naumburg Public Prosecutor's Office has called for the maximum sentence in the trial against Taleb al-Abdulmohsen. Chief Public Prosecutor Matthias Böttcher argued on Thursday before the Magdeburg Regional Court for life imprisonment with subsequent indefinite preventive detention — and simultaneously requested that the particularly grave culpability be established. According to welt.de, Böttcher described the violent act as something that "transcends every conceivable human dimension."

According to Böttcher, there were no serious doubts about al-Abdulmohsen's guilt. The defendant had "planned the act deliberately and in advance." The suffering of entire families triggered by it continues to this day and is "virtually indescribable."

On 20 December 2024, al-Abdulmohsen allegedly drove a hired vehicle across the Christmas market in Magdeburg. Six people died and more than 300 others were injured.

Since November, the doctor from Saudi Arabia has been standing trial before the Magdeburg Regional Court. He admitted to having planned an attack but denied deliberately running people over. His statements in court were at times incoherent and interspersed with conspiracy theories.

According to Böttcher, the actual motive for the act lay in a conflict with a Cologne refugee association, against which al-Abdulmohsen had lost a civil case. The defendant wanted to "take revenge" for this defeat as well as a series of unsuccessful criminal complaints.

In the coming trial days, the closing statements of the co-prosecutors and the defence will follow. The closing arguments are expected to take several days. A sentence date has not yet been set.
