Outside an apartment building in Ahrensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, a 32-year-old German man attacked two cleaning workers with a bladed weapon on Monday morning. According to WELT, a 43-year-old woman suffered critical injuries in the attack; her 54-year-old colleague was slightly injured.

The two victims were engaged in cleaning work in the building at around 9:45 a.m. when the suspect approached with a long, machete-like sword. They fled outside and took refuge in their vehicle. The attacker then smashed a window of the car and severely injured the woman with the bladed weapon, according to police. The colleague sustained minor injuries whilst intervening.

After the attack, the man fled on foot. Thanks to multiple witness reports, police officers arrested him near the crime scene. Responding officers seized the machete-like sword; specialists from the criminal police secured evidence and materials at the scene near Hamburg.

The 32-year-old is under investigation on suspicion of attempted murder. The murder commission is currently investigating the motive for the attack. "There are indications that the attacker was in a state of psychological crisis," police said on Monday afternoon. The suspect is in police custody; there is no further danger to the public following the arrest. The authorities said they would provide further information in the course of the day.
