A 51-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the fatal attack on Magdeburg's Christmas market in December 2024. Six people died in the attack, with more than 300 others suffering injuries, some of them severe.
Judges at the Magdeburg Regional Court found the defendant guilty of murder, among other charges. In addition to the maximum sentence, they also established the particular severity of guilt. This means that early release from prison after 15 years is virtually impossible.
The court additionally imposed a reservation of preventive detention. After the regular prison sentence expires, a court must determine whether the convicted person continues to be classified as dangerous.
The trial extended over several months. There were 40 hearing days, 117 witnesses were questioned, and more than 200 co-plaintiffs were involved in the proceedings.
