Major operation in Berlin: Drunken man with machete pulled from bushes
A severely intoxicated man triggered a major police operation in Berlin on Thursday afternoon. He is said to have run through Tangermünder Straße wearing only underwear and carrying a machete in his hand.
At around 14.15, a witness alerted the police after spotting the lightly dressed man with the weapon. According to BILD, dozens of officers then deployed with weapons drawn and searched a nature reserve in the area of Zerbster Straße and Tangermünder Straße. Additionally, an alarm unit and several members of a response unit were requested.
While reinforcements were arriving, a second resident reported the man again on Tangermünder Straße. The officers were directed back to the area and encountered the man they were looking for: he was crouching in bushes – without the machete, but with a head wound. A breath alcohol test showed 2.9 per mille.
To safely remove him from the bushes, officers threatened to deploy a taser. They then pulled him out and arrested him. Shortly afterwards, the man was taken under police escort to Berlin-Marzahn Accident Hospital. The machete was not found during the operation. The police confirmed the operation to BILD.
