Fatal knife attack in Olfen: resident kills fellow resident in care home
In a care home in Olfen in the Münsterland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, a 72-year-old resident attacked three elderly women with a knife on Friday evening. According to merkur.de, an 86-year-old resident died at the scene. Two other women, aged 81 and 83, were seriously injured — one of them is in life-threatening condition.
The attack took place in the cafeteria of St. Vitus Stift in Coesfeld district. The suspected perpetrator subsequently allowed himself to be arrested without resistance in his room, according to a police spokesperson in Münster. The perpetrator poses no further danger.
Police immediately established a murder investigation team. Several rescue helicopters landed outside the facility in the evening, and emergency services deployed a large-scale operation. Whether the victims were exclusively fellow residents was initially unclear according to initial reports — later statements from police confirmed that all three women were residents of the home.
The St. Vitus-Stift senior centre is operated by the city of Olfen. According to the operator, 77 elderly people in need of care live there, including people with dementia and residents of an adjoining supported living area with 36 barrier-free apartments.
