A woman has died following a knife attack at a Lidl store in Ratzeburg (Schleswig-Holstein) on the afternoon of the incident. The suspected attacker, a 44-year-old man with German nationality, was seriously injured and taken to the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) in Lübeck, according to reports citing police information.
The emergency call came in at 15:40, according to "Lübecker Nachrichten". At the time of the attack, there were approximately 20 customers in the store. The 44-year-old man is said to have attacked the woman with a stabbing weapon. A police spokesperson was unable to provide information about the exact circumstances of how the suspect himself was injured. The age of the murdered woman also remained unclear initially.
A witness told "Lübecker Nachrichten" that he and another man had overpowered the attacker. According to the witness, he had the impression that the attacker and victim did not know each other. The police spokesperson refused to confirm this.
Police cordoned off the area widely and stated that there was no danger to the public. Officers from forensic investigation and the murder squad were deployed in the evening. Police were also present at the clinic in Lübeck where the 44-year-old is being treated. Chaplains provided pastoral care at the scene for those affected and emergency responders. The motive for the attack remains unclear.
