Fatal knife attack at Lidl in Ratzeburg: murder squad investigates

A woman has died following a knife attack in a Lidl supermarket on Bahnhofsallee in Ratzeburg (Schleswig-Holstein) on Wednesday afternoon. According to BILD, a 44-year-old German stabbed the woman in the checkout area; she succumbed to her severe injuries.

Multiple emergency calls were received by the emergency services control centre, prompting police and fire services to respond with a large contingent. Lübeck police and prosecutors confirmed the woman's death in a joint statement. There were no other injured parties, as police told BILD.

Two construction workers who were in the discount store at the time of the attack witnessed the assault and intervened. They used bottles to go at the attacker, overpowered him and brought the man to the ground. The suspect was injured in the process and subsequently admitted to Schleswig-Holstein University Hospital (UKSH) in Lübeck. Lübeck police stated that "a suspect had been seriously injured".

According to investigators, around 20 customers were in the supermarket during the attack. The area around the crime scene was cordoned off widely. "There is no danger to the public," authorities said.

The murder squad of the district criminal investigations department and Lübeck prosecutors have begun investigating on suspicion of a homicide. Witnesses who possess photographs or videos from the crime scene can submit them via an online police portal.
