The defence of a 67-year-old has filed an appeal against the verdict of the Aschaffenburg Regional Court. A court spokeswoman confirmed that a revision has been requested to the Federal Court of Justice. The sentence is therefore not yet final for now.
The judges had found the defendant guilty of murder in the previous week and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The man admitted during the main hearing that he had killed 19-year-old Maria Köhler in her room on 30 July 1984 following a dispute. The young woman, who had begun training as a nurse, was killed by strangulation.
During the trial, the defence had argued only for manslaughter and furthermore requested that the case be discontinued on grounds of the statute of limitations. After the offence in the summer of 1984, the now-convicted man – who is stateless – travelled from Aschaffenburg via Frankfurt am Main to Turkey. There he evaded prosecution for decades until he was finally arrested in 2024.
