Shots fired at government officials — perpetrator captured

According to tagesschau.de, Bavarian police arrested a 60-year-old man after he shot two employees of the Neumarkt district office in Berngau. The suspect was slightly wounded in the leg during the operation and subsequently received medical care.

During a routine inspection on Thursday afternoon, a 45-year-old man and a 54-year-old female employee of the district office were shot by the man. They were supposed to check whether he was storing his weapons properly. The 45-year-old was found dead in front of the residential building; according to police, the 54-year-old died immediately from the shots.

Multiple emergency calls came in around 14:00. A large-scale police operation then began, which lasted well into the night. The suspect contacted the operations centre himself, stated that he was in his apartment and possessed firearms. He admitted to having fired shots but announced that he did not intend to give up without resistance.

Police forces surrounded the building and attempted over an extended period to persuade the man to surrender by telephone. The 60-year-old insisted that he would not voluntarily lay down his weapon. "Ultimately, an intervention took place, involving the use of explosives as well," a police spokesman said. During this operation, shots were fired that slightly wounded the suspect.

Police initially made no statements regarding the motive for the shooting. A police spokesman emphasised that the operation did not proceed "without resistance": "Officers also had to fire shots." The suspect is a German national.
