Trial against arms smuggler: secret military weapons cache discovered in Remscheid basement
Specialist police units with heavy weaponry, a chainsaw at the basement entrance and a labyrinth filled with firearms and ammunition: investigators in Remscheid, North Rhine-Westphalia, have uncovered a hidden arsenal.
An auto mechanic is alleged to have operated an illegal workshop for military weapons in a basement there. He allegedly manufactured fully functional weapons from decommissioned rifles. These subsequently reached criminal underworld networks through various channels.
The trial against the main suspect and two alleged accomplices now begins at the regional court. The prosecution accuses the men of serious illegal arms trafficking. Investigators uncovered the weapons cache following intensive investigation.
The public prosecutor's office assumes that the trio operated a professionally organised network. The weapons were apparently systematically refurbished and sold on to criminals.
