At Weißwasser district court this Friday, Saxony's Education Minister Conrad Clemens (CDU) faces court as an alleged speeding offender, as mdr.de reports. The incident dates back to 2023: Clemens, then still state secretary, is alleged to have driven at 81 km/h through a 30 km/h zone in Krauschwitz.
According to MDR SACHSEN, the original speeding fine procedure was converted into criminal proceedings. The court ordered the minister's personal appearance and lifted his immunity as a member of the state parliament for this purpose.
Clemens admitted to driving too fast. However, his lawyer disputed the allegation of illegal street racing. A court spokesperson told MDR SACHSEN that "grossly traffic-violating" driving also falls under the criminal paragraphs for prohibited motor vehicle racing.
An expert reconstructed the alleged speeding drive and drove through the cordoned-off 30 km/h zone in Krauschwitz multiple times on Thursday at around 100 km/h to secure evidence for the proceedings.
According to MDR SACHSEN, both parties rejected a court settlement proposal – dismissal in exchange for a fine of 10,000 euros and participation in traffic safety courses.
