A German court has sentenced Saudi-Arabian doctor Talib al-Abdulmuhsin to life imprisonment for a deadly attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg. The judges classified his culpability as particularly grave. Under German law, this classification means that early release from prison after 15 years is ruled out.
During the attack on 20 December 2024, the 51-year-old perpetrator drove a vehicle into the crowd on the central square of the Saxon state capital. Six people were killed. Among the victims were a nine-year-old boy and five women aged between 45 and 75 years. More than 300 other people suffered injuries of varying severity.
The prosecutor charged the physician with six counts of murder and 338 counts of attempted murder. The trial began in November of the previous year. Due to the high number of co-accusers and enormous media interest, the hearing took place in a specially constructed courtroom. The provisional hall in Magdeburg measured 65 metres in length and 30 metres in width and provided over 200 seats. After the proceedings are concluded, it will be dismantled.
The act had considerable political repercussions. It was among the incidents that, ahead of the early federal election in February, shaped public opinion and the election campaign in Germany. Migration and internal security thereby moved to the centre of political debate.
